American Surfer Murdered in Costa Rica Home Invasion
Kurt Van Dyke, 66, was strangled and stabbed during apparent robbery as girlfriend watched helplessly
A brutal home invasion in Costa Rica has claimed the life of Kurt Van Dyke, a 66-year-old American surfer whose family helped popularize the sport in Northern California, highlighting the persistent dangers facing expatriate communities in Central America.
Van Dyke was strangled and stabbed during an apparent robbery in Cahuita, where he lived on Costa Rica's southeast coast, according to local police. The attack occurred Saturday morning when two armed men stormed his property in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca.
The violence unfolded as Van Dyke's 31-year-old girlfriend, identified only by her last name Arroyo, was forced to watch helplessly. Police reported that the couple was tied up and confined to a small room while the attackers ransacked their home, making off with valuables and their 2013 Hyundai Elantra. Van Dyke's girlfriend suffered non-life-threatening injuries but survived the ordeal.
The murder has devastated Van Dyke's family, who are now grappling with the senseless loss. Friends and family are remembering the U.S. surfer after what authorities have confirmed as an apparent murder. His brother Peter told local media that Van Dyke "was a very benevolent, giving person who would help just about anybody" and "would never hurt anybody."
Van Dyke had deep roots in both California and Costa Rica, having grown up in Northern California before relocating to Central America and eventually becoming a Costa Rican citizen. He owned a hotel in the tourist town of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, just down the street from where he lived and died.
The case underscores the vulnerability of foreign residents in Costa Rica, particularly those in tourist areas where wealth disparities can make expatriates targets for violent crime. Costa Rican police are still searching for the two suspects, who remain unidentified and at large, leaving the community on edge.
A childhood friend revealed the haunting impact the murder has had on Van Dyke's family, particularly his son, as they struggle to process the violent end to a life dedicated to surfing and hospitality.
The investigation continues as authorities work to apprehend the perpetrators, but for Van Dyke's loved ones, no arrest can undo the trauma of losing someone described as generous and peaceful to such senseless violence. His death serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by Americans living abroad, even in popular retirement and tourist destinations.
