NYPD Harbor Officers Save Injured Bald Eagle from Icy Hudson
America's national bird gets a second chance thanks to quick-thinking officers who spotted the distressed eagle crying for help on floating ice
When NYPD Harbor Unit officers set out for a routine training exercise on the Hudson River Tuesday, they never expected to become wildlife heroes. But that's exactly what happened when they spotted an injured American bald eagle stranded on floating ice, crying out in distress near the George Washington Bridge.
Officer Michael Russo, a 16-year veteran of the Harbor Unit, said he had never seen a bald eagle on these waters before. "It was crying, yelping," Russo explained, describing how the bird seemed to be begging for help. "You could see it was in distress."
What followed was a carefully coordinated rescue that showcased both the officers' compassion and their professional expertise. Body camera footage captured the dramatic moment as the four-member crew—including Sergeant Mike Amello, Training Officer Nick Martin, and Pilot Patrick Memi—worked together to save America's national bird.
The team used a specialized catch noose to safely secure the eagle's wings and claws, preventing injury to both the bird and the rescuers. "We put a plan together, we used a catch noose to subdue its wings from flapping and its claws, at that point, Sgt. Amello put a cloth over its head and we grabbed it, walked it up the steps, and brought it onboard safely," Officer Russo detailed.
The rescue exemplified the NYPD's commitment to protecting all life. "No matter who or what it is, we will do our best to get it some help," Sergeant Amello emphasized, reflecting the department's dedication that extends beyond human emergencies to wildlife in need.
The eagle, which was bleeding from its wing when discovered, was quickly transported to meet Department of Environmental Conservation officials and then taken to a wildlife sanctuary in New Jersey for treatment. The positive news? The majestic bird is expected to make a full recovery.
This heartwarming rescue demonstrates how everyday heroes in uniform go above and beyond their regular duties. What started as a routine ice survey became a life-saving mission that gave America's symbol of freedom a second chance to soar. The officers' quick thinking and compassionate response turned what could have been a tragedy into a triumph—proof that when it comes to protecting life, New York's finest truly mean all life.
