Two Women Face Life Sentences for Kissing in Uganda
Arrests under draconian anti-LGBTQ+ law mark escalation of persecution in East Africa
Two young women in Uganda now face the possibility of life imprisonment after being arrested for allegedly kissing in public, marking one of the first known prosecutions under the country's harsh Anti-Homosexuality Act enacted in 2023.
Wendy Faith, a 22-year-old musician known as Torrero Bae, and Alesi Diana Denise, 21, were taken into custody after police raided their rented room in Uganda's north-west Arua City. The arrests came after neighbors reported the women for allegedly engaging in same-sex activities, with police claiming they caught the couple "red-handed on the cement floor" when officers arrived at the scene on February 18.
The case represents a chilling escalation in Uganda's systematic persecution of LGBTQ+ individuals. Under the country's draconian legislation, same-sex conduct can result in life imprisonment, while "aggravated homosexuality" - defined as cases involving people infected with HIV - carries the death penalty. The controversial Anti-Homosexuality Act was supported by many in Uganda but widely condemned by rights activists and others abroad, with promoters claiming it was necessary to protect children.
The women have been released on police bond while investigations continue, but their fate remains uncertain as authorities decide whether to proceed with formal charges. The arrests demonstrate how Uganda's anti-LGBTQ+ laws have created a climate of fear where neighbors feel empowered to report suspected same-sex relationships to authorities, turning private moments of affection into potential crimes punishable by decades in prison or death.
This prosecution comes as LGBTQ+ rights continue to deteriorate across East Africa, with Uganda leading a regional crackdown that has forced many sexual minorities into hiding or exile. The case of Faith and Denise illustrates the human cost of legislation that criminalizes love and identity, transforming young people's lives into cautionary tales of state-sanctioned persecution.
The international community has condemned Uganda's anti-LGBTQ+ laws, but such criticism has done little to protect vulnerable individuals like Faith and Denise, who now face the prospect of spending their lives behind bars for an act of affection that would be unremarkable in much of the world.
